From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

There is very little I love more than a fantasy novel with a seriously kick ass heroine and From Ash and Blood completely delivers! Jennifer L. Armentrouts newest book is a fantasy story that has so many plot twists and turns you’ll need to read it at least twice before really feeling like you READ IT! That’s right it’s a novel that tricks you into reading it more than once and you won’t be mad about it. I’ve now read this book a total of four times just so I could write this review and I’m already contemplating reading it a fifth time. First let me tell you about the characters. One thing that J. L. Armentrout does so well is draw the reader in and make us care, genuinely care about her characters and in this new book you’re going to want to grab Poppy and run away with her! Maybe pick up Hawke and Tawny as well. Poppy is short for Penellaphe—She’s the “Maiden” and if that sounds totally cultish and Manson Family-ish then you are completely right. Poppy is more than a shrouded Maiden however and you’ll have the best time getting to know this secret freedom fighter. ‘As the Maiden, the Chosen, a veil usually covered my face and hair at all times, all except for my lips and jaw.’ “That sounds like faulty logic to me,” I told him. He chuckled as he started toward the garden archway. “My logic is never faulty.” “I feel like that’s not something one would be aware of if it was,” I pointed out, smiling slightly. Hawke—He’s the insanely hot new guard that’s just arrived from the capital. He’s snarky and he’s fun and he’s oh so quotable: “You’re an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature.” “Now you insult me after throwing a dagger at my face? You’ve wounded my tender feelings.” “This is…just scandalous reading material for the Maiden.” Tawny—Poppy’s Lady in Waiting and best friend. Tawny is my second favorite supporting character in this series. She’s quietly brave. In a court that is filled with enemies on all sides Tawny dares to love Poppy and be her best friend. She is Poppy’s secret keeper and her partner in misadventures. She’s also saucy and highly incorrigible. Kieran—Kieran is also a supporting character throughout this book. He appears to be a close friend of Hawke’s and by the end of the book you’ll come to either love or despise Keiran. For me it’s love all the way baby!! "Among my people, it’s not polite to stare at a naked woman in a bathtub.” “Your people sound incredibly boring.” Viktor—Vicktor is Poppy’s father figure throughout the book. It’s clear the two of them have a very strong familial bond with each other. Viktor’s back story is tragic and sad but his love for Poppy and his disregard for the rules when it comes to training her shows that he loves her like the child he lost. He empowers Poppy from the very beginning. Not to be saved but gives her the training and tools she would need to save herself. Viktor is total Dad Goals!!!! “And you’ve been surrounded by old men like me.” “You’re not all that old.” He blinked. “Thanks.” A pause. “I think.” Really there are so many amazing scenes and plot twists in “From Blood and Ashes” that I could spend months writing theories, and character analyses. This book is so completely worth your time I would even venture to say that this is the best fantasy novel I’ve read this year!
