Have you ever read a book so vivid it stayed with you long after you finished it? A book that crept into your dreaming mind and left you with full vivid dreams that you remembered even after you woke up? This book, or should I say books since it's the first four books in the series did exactly that! I was in a reading funk looking for something completely different to cleanse my reading palate and now I'm hooked on this world. This is sort of a combination of sci-fi, with it's alternate dimension, a love story that transcends worlds (literally), some high fantasy with a struggle to reclaim her throne and some of the most memorable characters I've come across in a long time. Fans of S.L. Morgan's Guardians series will love this one. There are a lot of the same elements and story tropes found in both books with one exception...The Dusk Gate Chronicles has christian overtures that S.L. Morgan's work does not have. The religious elements do not in any way take away from this epic story line in fact it enhances it on a completely different level.
The premise of this series begins with our main character Quinn Robbins whose curiosity leads her to follow the shy quiet boy William Rose to discover what his secret is. How does William always manage to disappear into what is seemingly thin air. What Quinn discovers in the first of the four books is beyond anything she could have ever imagined. Another dimension that exists next to Earth's and in that world William Rose is not the shy quiet boy she's come to know at Bristlecone High.
There are seven books in this series so far with two novella's and one alternate point of view book which is the first book told from Williams point of view.
I would recommend this series to anyone looking for something completely different. The story is clean with no sex scenes so it's completely appropriate for younger readers. There are plenty of political and moral dilemma's that the characters face in their struggles to right the wrongs of the previous generation. This series sparked a great conversation between me and my nine year old son who read the books with me. Some of the more complex story lines were beyond his reach so I'd recommend this book to anyone ages 13 and up.
This series gets a five star review from me as the author manages to take you on a literary roller coaster of emotions and her details of the Deusterros is so vivid you feel as if you're actually there when you're reading it.

Graveyard Shift misses the mark.

Graveyard Shift by Angela Roquet             All that I can say about this book can be summed up in one succinct statement, so much wasted potential. Lana is a low-risk grim reaper from Eternity. In this setting all of the gods are included from Egyptian to Christian. Interesting right? Yes it is except the representative of Christian heaven is a drunk archangel Gabriel, which I am not really offended by just not excited that most of the gods are semi sort of flattering portrayals’ while a mostly unflattering one is portrayed for Christians. I like the concept she is going with an acceptance and togetherness. The souls are marked for their own destinations based on beliefs, I just felt that she didn’t quite achieve what she was going for unless she wanted Christians to be represented by a drunk archangel and kind of look like fools then I would say mission accomplished.
