Wild Hunger

Wild Hunger is the first in a spin off series from The Chicagoland Vampires. Wild Hunger picks up with the children of the main characters and this first book centers on Merit and Ethan's daughter.  While Merit and Ethan never get around to that Paris honeymoon in the original series their daughter is living/studying/working there.  Right from page one you know there's something wrong. Elisa, living and studying abroad in Paris, doesn't want to go home to Chicago. It's not her parents she's avoiding and yet you get the impression that's part of it.  In this newest spin-off readers will get to see all of our old favorite characters from Chicagoland Vampires in supporting roles. We'll also get to see how their children turned out as this new series, aptly named Heirs of Chicagoland, focuses on them and some surprising offspring of some of the other characters from the first series.  Wild Hunger definitely lived up to the standards that we've come to expe

Thank you Page Street Publishing for a copy of the ARC in exchange for a fair review. Tasia is enjoying her life, a cornerback for a great team until one night everything in her life falls apart. I was going to spoil the heck out of the book, but I went back to check the synopsis before I just charged ahead and I am glad I did, because they didn't give it away and neither will I. So now my challenge is how to talk about this book without ruining it! Okay first I am not a football fan, but I thought it was super cool that Tasia played football and went about playing in such a way that you could have nothing but respect for it. I am not so sure she handles everything else in a great way, but this is in essence is what this book is about. It is a coming of age, figuring out who you are, forgiveness, and dealing with major changes. Tasia doesn't always handle things right or even close to right, but she does in a way that is true to who she is and for me is what caught my a

Bright Ruin by Vic James

Thank you to Netgalley and Del Ray for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review. Disclaimer this 3rd and final book in the trilogy. Please read no further unless you wanted to be spoiled. All the of the surviving players are back. Abi is still shocked that Gavar helped her, but when she overhears him talking to Bouda she makes her escape from his house. She needs revenge and she knows just the person to help her. Luke finds himself imprisoned by Silyen, but they might actually have the same goals. Bouda wants to be Chancellor and she knows that Jenner is dangerous. All the pieces are laid, but even the best laid plans go astray. I know that is not a lot to say about the book, but it is the ending and I don't want to spoil it much. I am not sure how I feel about the ending. It almost feels less than, but on the other hand it almost seems perfect. Maybe the longer I think on it, the more my feelings may change. This book picked up right after the ending of Tarnished

Dracul by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker

Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons and Netgalley for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review. Through diaries and letters the Stoker family tells us the true story of Dracul. When Bram was a young child he was very sickly, but one night when all seemed lost and in a feverish haze Bram remembers his Nanna Ellen saving his life. So begins the tale. Bram tells us the whole story as he waits armed in a desolate tower while he waits to fight an unspeakable evil. Bram's brother and sister find out the truth about Ellen after a number of strange deaths occur near the family. Plus Bram has a strange injury after the Nanny saves his life. Can Bram and Matlida figure out the whole truth before it is too late? Look I am not going to lie, the moment I saw Stoker as the last name and it was about Dracula and Bram Stoker I was sold. I mean it was so easy it was ridiculous. I didn't honestly pay attention to what it was actually going to be about. So I a little surprised w

But it also makes her well versed in keeping secrets. When she finds the Silent Winds temple under attack and her mentor who gives her a scroll and orders to find the Steel Feather Temple, Yumeko knows that keeping secrets are now life and death. Kage Tatsumi is a member of the Shadow Clan and swordsman with no equal. But he is hiding secrets of his own, and he has been sent to get the scroll. Yumeko knows that she can't trust him, when he is seeking the very thing she is hiding, but she also knows that the road to Steel Feather Temple will long and fraught with danger and she will need all the help she can get. The Dragon is rising, and many players want that wish for themselves. Can Yumeko stay one step ahead of her many enemies? So let me start by saying that I am fairly certain that if Julie Kagawa publish

Freedom Trials

Thank you to Page Street Publishing for a copy of the ARC in exchange for a fair review. Evelyn needs to complete her trials in order to be considered rehabilitated and set free, and she has just found out that she is to start her trials. However, failure means death and with her reputation the other inmates will jump at the chance to put her to death. When she meets new inmate Alex, and he seems to know her she wonders what happened in the missing time. Evelyn doesn't actually remember her crime, but from what they told her it was just a few days, but she really doesn't get how Alex can know her if that was true. As she begins her trials and uncovers the truth will Evelyn be able to keep it together long enough to be free? This had a ton of potential and a really interesting premise, however I think it just got a little crazy with all the twists in the end. It feel more than a little flat for me. I mean the trials were pretty bloodthirsty and twisted but then when yo

After the Fire by Will Hill

Thanks to Sourcebooks and Netgalley for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review. I am going to keep this vague because I think it adds to the story so I won't use the main character name. She awakes in the hospital, she knows there was a fire, she tried to get the children out, and she had to rely on the government to help her. She isn't sure who to trust because Father John always said that they Outsiders lie, but she knows that he lied too so maybe she could tell them some of the things. As she begins to trust the doctor and the agent working with her, she begins to open up, and they let her see the other kids and that helps her. She enjoys being able to help the others, and she knows that the road they are on is hard and long. I really want to say more about this book, I hate to be super vague, but one of the things that hooked me was it took a couple of chapters before she would even tell them her name. This is a book that will draw you in and keep you re
