The Rift

The Rift (Rift Saga Book 1) by [Avery, Ella, Morgan, S.L.]

I received an ARC of The Rift in exchange for a fair and balanced review. Since we pride ourselves on doing just that with all of our authors it seemed like a small price to pay for a chance to read this new story by S.L. Morgan and experience Ella Avery's story telling for the first time as well.

When I first started reading The Rift I was on the fence. I didn't hate it but I wasn't really into it either. I trust S. L. Morgan as an author so I hung in there and kept going..then a tragic accident befalls vain, shallow Cara and I swear I got whiplash at how fast this book turned itself around!!

Cara the main protagonist in the story is a stereotypical Malibu barbie character. Her life seems vain and shallow on the surface but underneath that she feels stifled by the coldness of her parents and the betrayal of her boyfriend Jeff. Needless to say Cara is confused about herself, her life, and even to some extent who her friends are. A tragic accident leaves her with an out of body experience, yes literally out of her body, and she wakes up in a world completely removed from her own but with all of her old memories of a modern world. Cara can't decide what's fact from fiction and there were moments I couldn't either! I felt as confused as Cara did until it all starts to shake out and along with Cara you realize there are mystical forces behind her situation.

Cara is pushed to her limits and she surprises herself and those who seek her out by how strong she really is. She discovers what a "perfect life" really means and also who and what to trust which turns out to be a lot more difficult than one would expect.

It's difficult to say more without giving away spoilers so let's move on to S.L. Morgan. One of the things we love about her work is her beautiful prose and her believable character development in the Ancient Guardians Series. All of those masterful touches are there in the The Rift taking what could easily become a standard and formulaic story into the realm of surprise, suspense, and believability. I'm new to Ella Avery's story telling and she's a delightful find. Her story telling flows seamlessly with S.L. Morgans to create a beautiful and thrill inducing adventure for readers.

Book one The Rift is the perfect book to curl up with this winter!
