Fear the Drowning Deep by Sarah Glenn Marsh

Thank you to Sky Pony Press for a copy of the book in exchange for a fair review.

Bridey wasn't afraid of the sea until it took her Grandda all those years ago, but lately she is wondering if the stories are true. People are disappearing. Her mam has apprenticed her to the local witch. One day down at the beach, Bridey finds a young man washed ashore. She brings him home for her mam to heal him.

She shares her fears with the witch, and only the witch and the young man she calls Fynn believe her when she says something in the sea is taking all of these people. As more people disappear, Bridey knows that she must face her fear and take to the water, before everyone she loves is taken by the sea.

This has been on my tbr for years, and when I was offered the chance to review it, I jumped on it. I recently read Sarah's latest book and I had high hopes when I dived into this one. It is set on the Isle of Man in 1913. The Titanic has been lost in the last year, and Bridey has been afraid of the sea since the day her Grandda jumped off the cliff with a smile on his face.

Her mam paints pictures of things that have happened or will happen, though it takes awhile for Bridey to realize that. There is a bit of a love triangle as she does have a bit of relationship with Lugh until the mysterious Fynn appears. He isn't what he appears to be either, but as he teaches her to master her fear, she falls more and more in love with him.

This is a lovely story with all the fairytales brought to life, of the things that we should fear in the sea. It is full of hope and darkness, and when disbelief merges with the unbelievable.
